Threshold ultrasonic dosages for structural changes in the mammalian brain.

چکیده
The relationship between the acoustic intensity and the time duration of exposure, for a single pulse, necessary to produce a threshold lesion in the cat brain was studied. Focused ultrasound of 1, 3, and 4 MHz was employed with intensities ranging from 10 • to 2X10 • W/cm a with the corresponding pulse durations from 7 to 2XI0 • sec, respectively. Three types of lesions were observed attending three regions. At the lower intensities and long time durations of exposure, the lesion is produced by a thermal mechanism. At the highest intensities and shortest ime durations, cavitation is believed to be the mechanism responsible for the sometimes randomly appearing lesions. At intermediate dosages, the lesions are formed by a mechanical mechanism which is thus far not well understood. These results exhibit good agreement with that of other investigators on both the cat and the rat brain.

Frequency dependence of threshold ultrasonic dosages for irreversible structural changes in mammalian brain.
Threshold ultrasonic singie-pulse xposures for irreversible structural changes in the mammalian brain have been extended to include the frequencies !, 3, 4, 4.5, and 9 MHz. The acoustic intensities of the delivercd ' doses range from approximately 102 W/cm 2 to 2X 104 W/cm 2, with the corresponding exposure durations ranging from 2.5 sec to 5X 10 -4 sec, respectively. The threshold dosage curve...
متن کاملFrequency dependence of thresholds for ultrasonic production of thermal lesions in tissue.
The ultrasonic intensity threshold for producing lesions in mammalian brain tissue is not a strong function of frequency (over the range of 1-10 MHz) for exposures longer than 1 sec. A model is presented to explain this apparent lack of frequency dependence. It is assumed that the maximum temperature developed in the lesion volume for a given pulse duration is determined (1) by the absorption c...
متن کاملBlood Brain Barrier Disruption by Focused Ultrasound and Microbubbles: A Numerical Study on Mechanical Effects
Introduction: Microbubbles are widely used as contrast agent in diagnostic ultrasound. Recently they have shown good potential for applications in the therapeutic field such as drug delivery to the brain. Recent studies have shown focused ultrasound in conjunction with injected micro-bubbles could temporarily disrupt blood-brain barrier and let therapeutic agents transport into...
متن کاملBrain Structural Covariance Network in Asperger Syndrome Differs From Those in Autism Spectrum Disorder and Healthy Controls
Introduction: Autism is a heterogeneous neurodevelopmental disorder associated with social, cognitive and behavioral impairments. These impairments are often reported along with alteration of the brain structure such as abnormal changes in the grey matter (GM) density. However, it is not yet clear whether these changes could be used to differentiate various subtypes of autism spectrum disorder ...
